Open Up Heaven Featuring Vince Gill – The Story Behind The Song

Open Up Heaven is such a special song, largely due to the fact that Vince Gill, who has the voice of an angel, graciously sang the duet with me!  It is also special because I wrote it during a very difficult season of life.  It was difficult relationally, spiritually, and occupationally.

A season where I was very aware of my dependence on Him.

The message of the song is easy to misinterpret.

Christians typically think the song is about a man (the main character in the song) who would rather go to Heaven than continue living.  While that may be the case for some people, and I can definitely relate to that level of despondency, it is not the message I intended to communicate through the song.

Open Up Heaven is a simple farming song.

Nobody knows dependence like a farmer!  The main character in the song is praying for rain…praying that God will match his work efforts with a blessing that can only come from “above”.  In that respect, I believe that many people can relate to the message; they can relate to that sense of working hard, and yet feeling like you are never making progress.

This seems especially relevant at this time in history!

But the message is that we CAN rely on God, and we MUST, since the blessing we need can only come from Him. – Steve Wiggins

I can relate to this in more ways than you can imagine. The first time I heard you guys was at a concert back in ’98. You guys were the reason that my brother, myself, and two other friends started our own small band in church. It didn’t last very long, but I still think about the times we shared the goodness of God back then. I was only a teenager then, and have since moved away from my home state of NC to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I drove trucks professionally for about nine years, and used the cb radio I had to try to witness to other truckers. I listened to Christian radio stations all the time, and had a lot of time to pray, and just talk to God, as if He were sitting in the seat next to me. I had a bad back injury back in Oct. of 2011, and have since had to rely on God more than ever. I can totally relate to having to give everything to Him. I have had to apply for disability, and haven’t had an income for over a year. My fiance, who has supported me through everything, also has back issues, but somehow through God’s grace and mercy we have made it. God has blessed us in so many ways, even though we’ve had more than our share of hardships. I know that it’s only by His grace that we still have a home, food, and the basics we need to survive, as well as a family that cares about us and tries to help when they can. No matter how bad things get, we know that God will provide, and I have no reason to ever doubt that it’s because of Him that we make it day to day. We have had many, many other struggles, my injury being one of the less heart-breaking, but through it all, God has been there, making a way for us to continue. I don’t know what His purpose is for our lives, but we constantly strive to do His will, whether it be to move to another part of the country, or just go talk to a neighbor who is feeling down. The one thing I’ve learned above all else is that God gives us exactly what we need to make it and do His will, not what we think we’re supposed to get. We have learned that the greatest gift God gives to His children is love, whether it be His love, or the love of a significant other, or even the love of family and friends. God has granted my fiance and I the gift of true love; a love that’s pure in every way. I am so thankful for God’s blessings, and I’m thankful for you guys as well. Had I not attended that concert back then, I might not have gotten as close to God as I am now. You guys had a profound influence in my life. I just want to thank you for what you do, and for following God’s will, because you never know how much one song, or even an appearance, can affect and/or change someone’s life. Thank you for what you do, and may God always bless you and be with you in all you do. I pray that you can continue making a difference.
